Building an outline

Units and resources

Lesson 1 needs its Teach Book and its Exit Ticket. You don't write either of them into the outline: Ana wrote them, and each is a resource of its own. The row you add to Lesson 1 only says which resource goes there.

So the outline's two kinds of rows hold different things. A unit holds its own title, such as “Topic A”, and you write it in the outline. A resource's row holds nothing of its own. Its title and its status come from the resource it places, so when Ana changes Lesson 1 Teach Book's title, the row shows the new title without anyone touching the outline.

Try it: select Topic A, then Lesson 1 Teach Book, and compare what the detail panel says each one holds.

Loading the outline of Math

Topic A's title and the rows inside it belong to the outline. Lesson 1 Teach Book's row only points at the resource: its file name and status are the resource's, and the row has nothing else to show. In your work, that means a curriculum manager arranges resources without changing them, and a writer can keep working on a resource after it's placed.
