Building an outline

Step 7 of 9 in Building an outline

Sample data, read from content-sdk

Breadcrumbs and outline order

Before publishing, Ben wants to check every Exit Ticket in Math. The whole outline isn't needed, just a list of those rows. Five come back, and every one of them is called “Exit Ticket”.

A list like that keeps two things from the outline. It comes in outline order, the order the rows have in the outline, from Lesson 1's Exit Ticket to Lesson 5's. And each row can bring its breadcrumb: the units above it, from the top of the outline down to its lesson. Both come with the list itself, so a tool doesn't read the outline to show them. Each time you use the switch below, the list is read again, with breadcrumbs or without, so the time under the list shows what the breadcrumbs add.

Try it: turn off “Show where each one is placed” and note how long content-sdk took, then turn it back on, compare, and find Lesson 5's Exit Ticket.

Loading Math's Exit Tickets

Math's five Exit Tickets are five separate resources that share a title. By title alone they can't be told apart; with a breadcrumb, each says where it is. In your tools, any list of rows, such as what's not published yet or what's missing in Spanish, can come in outline order, with a breadcrumb for each.
